STEP 1: TRANSFERRING THE DESIGN & ENGRAVING
Engraving is the first fundamental step in linocut. This is where the artist brings their idea to life by sculpting the pattern or drawing onto a linoleum plate. This process, both technical and creative, requires precision and thoughtful planning, as each engraved line directly impacts the final result.
1. Preparing the drawing or image
Before engraving, it's important to transfer or directly draw the design onto the linoleum plate. Use a pencil and tracing paper to reproduce the image.
Keep in mind that the image will be reversed, like a mirror reflection, compared to the engraved matrix.
This preparation step is crucial to avoid mistakes and ensure the final result aligns with your vision.
💡 Pébéo Tip: Save time by using Pébéo's LINO transfer medium, which allows you to faithfully transfer printed images onto linoleum plates. After engraving, use dark lino inks for best results.
-
Unique on the market: Innovative and unmatched, it meets a need not addressed by existing solutions. No need to redo a drawing or find complicated methods for reproducing it.
-
Time-saving: Quick drying eliminates the long transfers required by traditional techniques (like tracing paper).
👉 Tip: To speed up drying, you can use a hair dryer. -
Artistic versatility: Allows sharp and accurate transfer, even for highly detailed designs or large-scale patterns.
-
Accessible: Only a regular paper printout is needed (no photo paper). Any photo can become a unique artwork.
-
Economical & durable: A small amount is enough for a successful transfer, especially useful for frequent use.
-
Compatible with standard tools: No specialized equipment required — just a sheet of paper, a brush, and a brayer.
🖌️ Apply a thin layer of medium to the linoleum plate and the printed side of the image using a brush.
📄 Place the printed side of the image against the lino plate, then roll over it to ensure good adhesion.
⏳ Let it dry completely (about 30 minutes).
💧 Lightly moisten the surface and gently rub to remove the paper layer — the paper should peel away.✅ Your image is now transferred onto the lino plate, ready to carve!
2. Choosing the tools
The Pébéo linoleum plate is an essential tool, offering a high-quality working surface. Its ideal texture ensures crisp, detailed prints for professional results every time.
Pébéo offers four different sizes to suit all types of linoleum plates:
-
15×10 cm: Ideal for small works or tests.
-
A5: Perfect for medium-sized prints or detailed projects.
-
A4: A standard size for larger carvings, offering a good balance of space and handling.
-
A3: For artists working on a larger scale, ideal for ambitious and large-format creations.
The grey colour of the linoleum enhances visibility of engraving marks while being neutral enough not to interfere with ink. This tone helps the artist clearly see details during the engraving process, ensuring a high-quality outcome.
With a thickness of 3.2 mm, these plates meet market standards, offering a perfect balance between flexibility and sturdiness. Their textured surface ensures easy handling and smooth engraving.
-
Long-lasting use: The carved linoleum plate can be reused for around ten prints.
-
Care: Inked linoleum plates can be cleaned with a damp cloth or sponge.
⚠️ Do not rinse the plate directly under water, as this may damage the surface.

-
Accessible: Durable and affordable tools, suitable for both hobbyists and professionals.
-
Fully compatible: Designed to work seamlessly with Pébéo linoleum plates and inks.
4. Engraving techniques
Engraving involves removing parts of the linoleum that won’t receive ink, leaving raised areas that form the printed design.
-
Excavate empty spaces: Remove the areas between lines to enhance contrast.
-
Play with textures: Vary pressure and direction to create visual effects like hatching or gradients.
💡 Tip: “What I leave uncut will be inked.”
STEP 2: INKING
Inking is a crucial stage in the printmaking process, where ink is applied to the engraved plate to transfer the image onto paper.
For clean, detailed prints, using high-quality ink and appropriate brayers is essential.
PREPARING THE INK
1 – Smooth, non-porous surface:
Start by spreading the ink on a smooth, non-porous surface (such as a glass plate) before applying it to the engraved linoleum plate.
⚠️ Warning: Do not apply the ink directly onto the engraved linoleum plate.2 – Dispense the ink:
Place a small amount of ink onto the smooth surface. It’s best to start with a little and add more as needed to avoid waste.3 – Roll out the ink:
Use a suitable rubber brayer to spread the ink by rolling back and forth, up and down, and side to side.
The goal is to achieve an even, very thin layer with a smooth, consistent texture on the brayer.4 – Transfer the ink to the plate:
Once the brayer is evenly coated, ink the engraved linoleum plate thoroughly, ensuring the entire engraved surface is covered.
You can go over the plate several times with the brayer to ensure even coverage.

THE COLOUR CHART
A selection of 24 carefully chosen shades, covering the full spectrum of linocut needs — from classic works to modern creations.
-
16 Traditional Shades
Includes essential tones such as three variations of black, plus trichrome black (a blend of the three primary colours), and three shades of blue — perfect for monochrome prints or high-contrast compositions.
These frequently used colours offer unmatched depth and richness.
White plays a strategic role for creating subtle gradients and highlights. -
3 Metallic Shades
Pébéo continues to innovate in linocut with three unique mirror-effect metallic inks — water-based with an exceptional and exclusive finish.
Antique Gold: An exclusive colour evoking the elegance of aged metal. -
2 Fluorescent Colours
Pébéo once again innovates by introducing two opaque fluorescent shades to its lino range — a rare technical feat on the market. -
3 Duochrome Shades (Dyna Effect)
These inks shift color based on light and background — adding a dynamic, multidimensional effect to prints. The effect is most visible on dark paper.-
On Black Paper:
Dynamic and Striking – Colour shift varies with light and movement, giving a sense of depth and energy ideal for bold, contemporary work. -
On White Paper:
Elegant and Subtle – The duochrome takes on a pearly, delicate appearance. The effect is more subtle but retains its unique luminosity, perfect for poetic or minimalist creations.
-
⚠️ Pébéo Tip:
Duochrome effects show best on dark surfaces. If you only have light paper, ink an uncarved lino plate using one of Pébéo’s black inks, transfer it to your white sheet, let it dry, then transfer your engraved motif inked with duochrome on top of the black background.
MEDIUMS
⚠️ Important: These mediums must be mixed with the lino inks on the inking surface using a palette knife before rolling.
💡 Tip: You can mix the two mediums together before blending with the ink.
LIGHTENING BINDER
Pébéo’s Lightening Binder is an essential medium for expanding creative possibilities.
It lightens tones while preserving the texture and opacity of Pébéo lino inks.
Ideal for creating subtle shades and enhancing the colour palette.
Gradually add the binder to adjust the tone as needed.
⚠️ Only compatible with traditional colours (Series 1).SLOW DRYING GEL
The slow drying gel slows the drying time of water-based lino inks (doubling the working time).
It gives artists more flexibility to refine gradients, blends, or details.
Perfect for complex techniques requiring smooth color transitions or layered effects.
Simple use: Mix 50% retarder with 50% ink.
Compatible with all shades — including duochrome, metallic, and fluorescent.
Ink properties are preserved: opacity, blendability, and color richness remain intact.
BRAYERS
Pébéo inking brayers combine ergonomic design with professional quality to deliver optimal user experience.
With an ergonomic wooden handle and premium rubber roller, these tools ensure precise and even ink application with comfort and durability.-

STEP 3: PRINTING
Printing is the final stage of the linocut process, where the engraved and inked image is transferred onto a paper.
This step reveals the outcome of the engraving and inking work.
The choice of paper and the pressing tool significantly influences the final result.
Key Steps in the Printing Process:
Positioning the Paper:
Place the paper onto the inked plate, making sure to align it properly to avoid any shifting or misalignment.Applying Pressure:
Use a spoon to apply even pressure over the back of the paper. This pressure transfers the ink from the raised, unengraved areas of the plate onto the surface.
Consistent pressure is essential for a clean, even print.Careful Lifting:
Slowly and gently lift the paper to avoid smudging or tearing.Drying the Print:
Let the ink dry completely to prevent smudging or ink transfer.
Drying time may vary depending on the type of ink used.
